The House with a Clock in its Walls

Name: The House with a Clock in its Walls

Directed By: Eli Roth, and apparently his first film to not receive a hard R rating.

Subgenre: PG-13 Fantasy, Comedy

Series: Spooktober 2018 entry #1

Review: With this was the first foray into my Spooktober series originally hosted on Facebook in 2018. I wanted to start off the list with a fairly light entry, so what better than a big-budget fantasy horror? And with Jack Black at the helm, you know there's at least some comedy to be had. I went in blind with this one, knowing nothing about the plot (and the fact that it's based on the Lewis Barnavelt series of young-adult novels), but I ended up having way more fun than I expected. Plot-wise, it follows young Lewis Barnavelt as he moves into a mysterious manor and home to his uncle (Jack Black) who also happens to be a warlock. Magical shenanigans ensue from there. The film is essentially a monster mashup of Harry Potter and Goosebumps. While it has some suitably dark moments (looking at you, dolls) it's unabashedly a movie for younger audiences, it's still entertaining enough to keep this horror-hound sated. You likely won't find anything overtly scary, but there's plenty of dark bits to bring on the spookiness all while being fairly kid-friendly.

Overall Score: 3 out of 5 Chads creeped out by clocks. Did The House with a Clock in its Walls scare you? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
