Apostle
Name: Apostle
Directed By: Gareth Evans
Subgenre: Period Piece, Supernatural
Series: Spooktober 2018 entry #17
Review: Apostle tells the story of a man who sets out to a remote Welsh island to infiltrate a dangerous cult in order to rescue his kidnapped sister. First things first: Apostle absolutely oozes atmosphere: it's grim and dirty and raw, but not just for the sake of it. While a touch longer than your standard-issue hour-and-a-half horror flick, the extra run time is spent crafting an interesting and enthralling world of sympathetic cultists and their strange gods. The film gets brutal at times and doesn't flinch from putting its gore on center stage, but the viscera adds to the depth instead of being merely gratuitous. Apostle has considerably more depth than the typical "evil cult" film, so much so that a fellow horror blogger argues, compellingly so, that Apostle is severely constrained by it's mere two-hour run-time (and even that felt noticeable) and would have been better served by being a miniseries. While I tend to agree, while the story was as compelling as it was packed to the brim with unique ideas and world-building elements, often times horror lurks in the unseen. Plus, if it was a miniseries, I probably wouldn't have gotten around to checking it out--and I definitely recommend checking it out!
