Review: Creepshow is an anthology series of horror shorts with each episode comprised of two roughly twenty-minute tales. The series is an episodic reboot of the original franchise helmed by Stephen King and George A. Romero back in the 80s; and, like the films that preceded them, the tales are woven together with an aesthetic very intentionally evoking an aesthetic of horror comics from the 50s with wraparounds hosted by The Creep (the ghoulish thing on the thumbnail). Like every anthology, and say it with me: 🎶some tales are stronger than others🎶. In Creepshow, each entry features a monster or phenomenon of some kind. Hearkening back to the 80's again, the monster designs are primarily done with practical effects and only supplemented with CGI, though the effectiveness of the latter varies between entries. What really makes Creepshow stand out are the hyper-dramatic comic book stylized shots--the dramatic zooming, Dutch angles, and bold, in your face lighting--a calling card of the original franchise. While they're all macabre in their own right, most entries trade overt scares for an unadulterated horror aesthetic, and that seems to be the winning formula for having a fun time in genre. To me, the first and last episodes are the strongest, which isn't that surprising given that the first story is an adaptation of a Stephen King short (Gray Matter), and the last has a gonzo tale of body horror riding next to a story by Joe Hill (Stephen King's son) as directed by Tom Savini (practical effects extraordinaire). The other episodes feature a World War II spin on a classic horror monster, a man whose been stuffed into a suitcase, encounters with a living scarecrow, and a new iteration of the monkey's paw story, among others! If you're a horror fan, especially one looking for a pure dose of 80's goodness, check Creepshow out on Shudder--you won't be disappointed.
And with that, my friends, I wish you a very happy Halloween 2018!
