Hell Fest

Directed ByGregory Plotkin

Subgenre: Slasher

SeriesSpooktober 2018 entry #13

Review: Every year, Hell Fest is the most happenin' "haunted house" around; tickets sell out in minutes. With bodies littering all corners of the haunt and masked monsters and murderers walking around in plain sight, wouldn't be it be easy for an actual murderer (who clearly studied at Leslie Vernon's Institute for Masked Killers) to slip in and terrorize a group of unsuspecting teenagers? Hell Fest is, at its core, a teenage slasher that's elevated by its fun and varied set design and the occasional willingness to not to flinch away from a few fairly graphic kill shots. The setting is really what elevates this movie compared to other slashers...the problem is, I feel like the film would be more fun if they just did a walking tour of the haunt (à la Hell House LLC) instead of trying to shoehorn in a slasher plot. Hell Fest isn't bad--in fact, it has a few twists and turns that break the typical teen slasher mold--but it's also every other slasher movie you've seen just transplanted into a more interesting environment.

Overall Score: 3 out of 5 Chads developing spontaneous, Halloween-related agoraphobia. Did Hell Fest scare you? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
