In the Tall Grass
Name: In the Tall Grass
Directed By: Vincenzo Natali
Subgenre: Lovecraftian Thriller
Series: Spooktober 2019 entry #6; review #37
Review: After stopping on the side of long, lone country road, a couple hears a boy screaming for help in the tall grass. He's lost, and so the couple goes in to help. What awaits in the tall grass is a mystery that continues to mount until revealing its true primordial terror. This marks Netflix's third great Stephen King adaptation (Gerald's Game and 1922) and, for despite its simple setting (shot almost entirely in the titular tall grass), the film delves into far deeper territory. To say more would be too much. Unlike the last movie reviewed, this is an actually mystery that is slowly, steadily unraveled to the viewer but leaves just enough left unsaid to let the horror take root. While some may feel that the fairly relatable premise gets lost midway through, I actually feel that it's replaced by something far more menacing. There are definite Children of the Corn vibes smashed together with the deteriorating sanity of The Shining or pretty much any of H.P. Lovecraft's works (and it's a fun coincidence that one of the lead actors happens to look like the grandfather of weird horror himself), yet In the Tall Grass still occupies its own niche and, I feel, is the strongest King entry Netflix has offered as of writing this review in 2019.
Overall Score: 4 out of 5 Chads lost in the tall grass without snacks. Did In the Tall Grass scare you? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
