Soul to Keep

NameSoul to Keep

Subgenre: Supernatural

SeriesSpooktober 2019 entry #13; review #44

Review: A group of generally unlikable characters ("I'm not just a Wiccan: I'm a DARK Wiccan!" Much edge; very cool) who accidentally/intentionally summon the demon Beelzebub while partying at their old family farm. Soul to Keep is not a good movie. It is a formulaic, paint-by-numbers horror that checks off more than enough trope-boxes (one-dimensional characters who get into trouble because they make stupid decisions, jump scares and the typical LOUD NOISES = spooky equation, "twists" that add nothing but more plot holes, etc.); if you're anything like me*, you will spend more time groaning at your screen than having any sort of horror-related reaction. It would be entirely forgettable if not for how bland it was. To make matters worse, the film also "suffers" from an intentionally inflated score on IMDB and around some horror blogs (I'm starting to sense a trend here). There are some movies that are "so bad they're good," but this is not one of them. I want to give it some extra points for having a deaf lead actress, but, while her acting is commendable, inclusivity by itself isn't enough to redeem this bargain-bin-filler. Skip it.

Overall Score: 1 out of 5 Chads tripping into demonic plot-holes. Did Soul to Keep scare you? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
