Review: Let me preface this review by stating that the impetus for starting this blog came from my half-baked Spooktober Challenge series back in 2018 wherein I'd watch a new (to me!) horror film and provide a quick and dirty review for my other horror-enthusiast friends on Facebook. The goal was to predominately cover what was easily accessible on streaming services with the periodic dip into other avenues, though I always wanted to watch something I had yet to see up until that point. I say all that in order to say: no, you aren't crazy; I haven't reviewed the original Tales from the Hood just yet, as I couldn't happen to find it on streaming services back in 2018. When I do get around to watching it, I'll make sure to provide a link here. On to the actual review...
Tales from the Hood 2 is an anthology horror film. In typical anthology fashion, the film incorporates four separate stories with a fifth framing narrative that ties them all together. Tales from the Hood 2's wraparound centers on how a white "patriot" group is creating a knock-off RoboCop ("Robo-Patriot") which is capable of learning from both first- and second-hand experiences, so the group has brought in a renowned black bard to feed the Robo-Patriot stories to help it learn to better identify criminals--though the supposed patriot group has more nefarious goals for the crime-sniffing AI in mind. The problem is: this Storyteller delights in feeding Robo-Patriot stories of systematic social and governmental injustice with from the black perspective. Each tale ranges from overtly campy to as-serious-as-a-Lifetime-Channel-flick. Imagine Get Out but dropping all pretense or subtlety: but the film's goal isn't to be subtle, and it generally leans into the intentionally over-to-top tone as a way to make the social message more palatable to viewers who may not otherwise be as receptive, and despite (or perhaps in spite of) that, Tales from the Hood 2 remains as compelling as it is incendiary. Tales 2 is not a particularly great movie, but it's a campy anthology with a brutally-serious message that's been topical for far too long. Get out your popcorn, settle into a comfy seat, and prepare yourself for stories like a killer gollywog doll and a gangster spirit out for revenge, among others.
Overall Score: 3 out of 5 Chads continuing to grapple with the existential horror of marginalized experience (part 2!). Did Tales from the Hood 2 scare you? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
