Terrifier
Name: Terrifier
Directed By: Damien Leone
Subgenre: Slasher
Series: Spooktober 2018 entry #5
Review: Terrifier revolves around the wacky and ultra-violent shenanigans of Art the Clown, who happens to have one of the coolest "evil clown" designs I've seen in horror in recent memory (and one tag line for the film reads something along the lines of: "Art the Clown makes Pennywise look like Krusty"). Terrifier is not a complex movie--it's literally about an evil clown killing people throughout the course of one Halloween night--but what it lacks in depth it makes up in extreme gore. It's got an incredibly memorable kill scene that is so graphic that it transcends pure horror and moves into "campy absurdist" territory, which I happen to love. That said, it's not the only film to offer up such a demented way to kill someone: Bone Tomahawk has essentially the same unflinching scene but manages to maintain the horror and disgust of it all. That said, I don't believe Leone is trying to maintain that same sense of disgust, dread, and loss that's found in Bone Tomahawk; Art the Clown is just a gonzo, heinously evil and over-the-top murder-machine, and that's okay in my book. I definitely recommend this one, especially closer to Halloween.
