The Ice Cream Truck
Name: The Ice Cream Truck
Directed By: Megan Freels Johnson
Subgenre: Thriller (some sites claim this is a psychological horror and other say it's a horror comedy: I disagree with all of those)
Series: Spooktober 2018 entry #20
Review: The Ice Cream Truck--and take note to differentiate this from the The Ice Cream Man of the 90's--is about a woman who moves back to the suburbs and has to fend off against a killer ice cream man for some reason. There's a special place in my heart for campy, so-bad-they're-good or intentionally cheeky horror films. The Ice Cream Truck isn't one of those. In fact, the movie feels like it wants to be two separate movies: a tense drama about returning back into the suburbs with an almost Stepford Wives feel, and also a generic slasher film; both plots fail on their own and are somehow made worse by the other--and that's before the "twist" ending. There is no context to the killings, no resolution at the end, and everything just feels stitched together to try and make something unique with a nostalgic atmosphere while skimping on actual substance. That said, the movie is competently made and decently acted, and it does manage to bring something unexpected to the table (even if I didn't particularly enjoy it). The Ice Cream Truck meets the technical requirements of being a horror movie, but there's plenty of better options available.
Overall Score: 2 out of 5 Chads will pass on these frozen treats, thanks. Did The Ice Cream Truck scare you? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
