SeriesSpooktober 2018 entry #27

Review: After being turned down for the school dance by her crush, a teenage girl develops a truly monstrous plan to get revenge. This one is a diamond in the rough for fans of extreme*, unrelenting horror. While I've included it in the "torture" subgenre, made famous by the likes of the Saw and Hostel franchises, it captures the general plot fairly well--but don't be fooled: there's plenty of twists and turns along the way here. If it wasn't obvious by now, The Loved Ones is situated firmly in the grindhouse side of the horror genre: its scenes of exploitation and progressively more brutal torture will keep most at the edge of their seats. Tension is built, released, and ramped up again and again to the point of near-absurdity, but it just works. While those who prefer a more subtle, artistic approach to horror will likely find this film some mix of nauseating and banal, The Loved Ones is not extreme for the voyeuristic sake of it: every scene, every character contributes to the story in some way. If you're a fan of balls-out, unrelenting horror, definitely don't miss out on this one. If you do, you just might be left asking yourself: "am I not pretty enough?"

Overall Score: 4.5 out of 5 Chads afraid of going down into the cellar. Did The Loved Ones scare you? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
