The Void

NameThe Void

Directed By: Jeremy Gillespi and Steven Kostanski

Subgenre: Lovecraftian, Body Horror

SeriesSpooktober 2018 entry #15

Review: A police officer brings a wounded person to a lonely hospital before cultists descend on the place to complete their profane ritual to nameless powers they worship. The Void makes heavy use of practical effects with its monster designs which are, unfortunately, obscured by fairly dim lighting throughout the action sequences. The movie blends together Lovecraftian overtones with the same body horror found in The Thing, and that's where the film is at it's mostly effective. The pacing feels a bit rushed in parts, but it's one of the better homages to Lovecraft out there right now. If you've been looking for Love(craft) in all the wrong places, come check this one out: it checks all the boxes (weird cults, cosmic dread and human insignificance, crazy monster design, etc.) even if the plot occasionally feels a bit forced.

Overall Score: 4 out of 5 Chads now scared by triangles. Did The Void scare you? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
