Delivered
Name: Delivered
Directed By: Emma Tammi
Subgenre: Thriller
Series: Spooktober 2020 entry #13; review #75; Blumhouse's Into the Dark entry #3
Review: Taking a gander at the poster, you can probably have a strong guess as to what Delivered is about: a pregnant woman meets someone who has much darker plans for her and her child. Unfortunately, as a horror-thriller, the pacing and over-used dream sequences prematurely discharge any tension that's built up along the way. The film isn't shy about showing its hand from the outset which, in my opinion, only detracts from the experience. "Delivered" is an attempt at merging Misery with Inside, but ultimately ends up less than the sum of its inspirations. That said, it doesn't flinch from getting dark where it needs to and toys with some predictable tropes in a bleak way (for the better), not to mention the racial subtext covered with a uniquely modern veneer. Will Delivered blow your mind? No. But will it keep you chained to your bed hooked? Probably.
Addendum: I'm getting very good at unintentionally watching Blumhouse's Into the Dark entries, this being the third accidental entry so far (with Uncanny Annie and Culture Shock being the two previous). Given that, I'm pulling the trigger and giving this an honorary series--a series review inside a series review? How apt, given the film! Given that each Into the Dark film is based around a (horrifyingly reinterpreted) holiday, you probably won't be shocked in learning Delivered is Tammi's take on Mother's Day.
