Review: For those not already familiar, I'd like to introduce you to Brandon Cronenberg, David Cronenberg's son. You might know Papa Cronenberg from eXistenZ, Videodrome, and The Fly; he quickly became the go-to name in body horror by showing humanity's increasingly unhealthy relationship with technology in gruesome, mind- (and body-) bending ways. As the saying goes, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, at least in this case. Brandon's most recent foray into psychological horror, Possessor, follows an organization of assassins who use technology to possess unsuspecting people in order to use their bodies in the organization's various crimes. Shockingly, things take a ghastly turn. To put it simply, I feel like Cronenberg has aggressively hate-fucked my mind; I'm still reeling from the experience (note that, if the former piques your interest, check out Header. Or, maybe, don't). The uncut version is unflinching: it is a grim, surreal dive into the depths we're willing to go to prove who we truly are. Possessor is a challenging movie: between the raw eroticism, the ultraviolence, the twisting narrative, and the bleak ending, you won't have a comfortable time; but if you're willing to invest in it, you might just find the film growing in you...like a worm.
