Spiral (2019)
Name: Spiral
Directed By: Kurtis David Harder
Subgenre: Thriller
Series: Spooktober 2020 entry #11; review #73
Review: Spiral follows a gay couple and their daughter as they move in to their new home in a small town, and they quickly find that things aren't quite as pristine has they had hoped for. The film is unapologetically gay--it's a pivotal element of the plot, but the social commentary is executed in a unique (if a bit on-the-nose) way. Spiral also happens to be rated PG-13, but the climax is dark enough to warrant the lack of overt scares prior to it; save this one for the older kids, parents and guardians. Speaking of, the film relies mostly on psychological tension to build suspense and intrigue, but there are some jump scares thrown in seemingly for the (failed) purpose of making the film seem like more of a traditional horror movie. They're clunky and unsatisfying, but they do have some plot connection. Spiral ends on a fairly powerful note which solidifies its social commentary but, ironically, numbs some of the gut-punching climax that took place moments before.
