The Neon Demon
Name: The Neon Demon
Directed By: Nicholas Winding Refn
Subgenre: Psychological
Series: Spooktober 2020 entry #8; review #70
Review: Today, we're going to look at The Neon Demon, and boy is it pretty to look at. Seriously, the movie is absolutely gorgeous. But, like the beauty industry it so heavily criticizes (social commentary in a horror movie? Impossible!), The Neon Demon ultimately feels hollow, more alluring style than inspired substance. The film follows an underage model as she descends into the dark depths of the aforementioned industry. It's a slow-burn, art-house horror that culminates in a fairly dismal and surreal way. While some tension is built throughout the nearly 2 hour run-time, the pay-off may leave the average horror fan feeling unsatisfied. The Neon Demon is prettier than it is smart, and I'm acutely aware of that irony.
