SeriesSpooktober 2020 entry #10; review #72

Review: I actually think it's pertinent to quote the Shudder tag line in full to really showcase what we're working with here: "From the mind of Misfits and metal icon, Glenn Danzig, VEROTIKA is an utterly outrageous trilogy of erotic horror stories culled from the filmmaker's long-running comic series. Destined for cult status and demanding rowdy group viewings, VEROTIKA is unlike anything you've ever seen." I'll give them credit: they're not wrong, but Verotika will achieve cult status much in the same way The Room has but in a significantly less entertaining way. The film is a trilogy "hosted" by Danzig's take on Elvira: the first entry is about a sex worker who cries on a terrible CGI spider because her client saw that she has nipples for eyes, so the spider turns into a mustachioed spider-man who snaps people's necks and also is maybe her id? The nipples thing is never addressed. The second entry is about a lady who is slightly disfigured so she cuts off people's faces--this is the main "erotic" part of the film, since it's set in a strip club, and let me tell you: there's nothing less erotic than hearing Danzig shouting about the void in the background of any sexual encounter (but hey, no Danzig-kink-shaming here, friends). The third entry is basically Danzig's take on Elizabeth Bathory but just so much dumber. Literally every scene in this movie is too long by a minute or more, especially in the last entry. The acting is so atrocious that your rowdy group viewing will ultimately grow bored, if not angry, about their collectively wasted time. Pretty much every aspect of Verotika is ripped from a different source and made worse in some manner. I'm normally a fan of low-budget, big-idea movies, even if they're as batshit insane as the first entry (and even the second, to a much lesser degree); if Verotika was filled to the brim with that utter strangeness, I'd actually enjoy it quite a bit more, but those last two entries--and especially the final tale--just kill whatever momentum the film had going for it. I'm sorry if I'm being a bit too harsh, my hulking, personified impulse drive has been giving me a really hard time lately--and he's not even trying to catch any flies or mosquitoes around the house!

Overall Score: 1 out of 5 Chads making direct eye-contact with the unblinking nipple-eyes. Did Verotika scare you? Maybe it woke up something deep within you? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
