Review: It is that time of the season where the Council of Chads decides on which possessed, killer item to induct into our collection. See, we have a bit of a problem: we love stupid horror movies about items that normally shouldn't be alive coming to live and wreaking all sorts of havoc. In 2018, we started our collection with the famously lampooned Death Bed: The Bed That Eats; in 2019, we added the Killer Sofa; in 2020, we collected the killer Nazi carousel unicorn from CarousHELL; and in 2021, we're putting on a pair of evil pants. That's right, we're watching the Shudder original: Slaxx. The film follows Libby, the plucky new salesclerk at a trendy clothing store, as she tries to stop a pair of possessed jeans from murdering everyone it comes across. And with a premise like that, you might expect a comedic tone more in line with the Killer Sofa--one of unabashed goofiness--but, while Slaxx does lean into absurdist territory for a few laughs, the film opts to use its platform to rail against some real-world evils. It's still a horror comedy, of course, but it's one with a point to all of the inane madness. Is the message a bit ham-fisted? Of course: it's tucked into a movie about a pair of killer jeans (and not just because they make our asses look fire). Does that medium dilute the message? Not necessarily, though it will, admittedly, feel a bit tacked on and lacking substance given how long the film took to get there. Slaxx is a gonzo film about killer pants. It's funny, the protagonists are relatable (especially if you've got familiarity with the world of retail), and it elevates its premise much more than it needed to--though the pacing can get a bit slow at times. Slaxx won't be the wackiest film the Council has collected over the years, nor will it be the most brutal, the most hysterical, or the most poignant, but it mixes those components in an entertaining manner enough to keep our smooth brains happy.

Overall Score: 3.5 out of 5 Chads learning to fear angels again. Did Slaxx scare you? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
